Below is a brief introduction to the Cruiser ship. For more in-depth information about Cruisers, check out this Star Trek Online Cruiser Guide.

In Star Trek Online, Cruisers are the most powerful and largest type of ships. Due to their size, the Cruisers are known for having more gun bays. Along with this, their size gives them more room for inventory or transporting colonists. As always, positives must come with negatives, though. Their downside is that they have less maneuverability than the other types of ships.

Along with being more powerful than the others, cruisers are able to get into advanced warp zones. This allows them to distribute their power across a large crew. In effect, this improves the ship’s repair rate, engineering bay, boarding party effectiveness, and more. Along with this, it grants them a large inventory, which gives them a great place during long distance missions.

Cruisers are great while both in combat and out of combat. While in combat they have the most power and are able to regenerate fast when damaged by others. When out of combat they are able to transport a lot of cargo or colonists for supplying planets, space stations, or other ships. Just keep in mind their slow maneuverability and storage space makes them a grand target for enemies.

Primary Role : They supply a lot of power and have the ability to host a large crew, granting quick repairs and boarding party tactics.

Special Benefits : They have a large warp core, which grants a power bonus, a large cargo space for various inventory, bonuses to power in all of their systems, and they have more weapon slots than either Science vessels or Escorts.

The release of Star Trek Online is just around the corner and they mentioned numerous times about the exciting ship classes that will be made available. Ships will come in three basic classes, the Cruiser class ship, the Science class ship, and the Escort class ship.

From this clear division, the gameplay will be balanced with all class ships having their own pros and cons, much like a scissor, rock and paper game. In a nut shell, the Cruisers are battle-oriented ships, the Escorts are speed-oriented ships, and the Science are supported-oriented ships. This would be the basic attributes that the ships start out with. From here on, players could customise their ships to their liking with slots for weapons, power skills or bridge officer trays, all of which will boost your ships performance on the battlefield.

Players have a lot of flexibility when approaching combat too. You will have the option to allocate energy to the different systems on the ship. For example, if you want to increase attacks, then you allocate more energy to the weapon system, however your speed and defence could decrease as a result. Moreover the shields could be allocated as well to four different directions. The position of your ships is very important as it determines the amount of damage taken or the amount of damage the player can inflict on its opponents.

With such a long-standing and expansive Star Trek universe (one that got even larger with the alternate-universe version of the Original Series that was introduced with the new movie) there have been many questions as to when Star Trek Online is actually set.

Cryptic has decided to set Star Trek Online in 2409, which takes place roughly thirty years after the events that happened in the final Next Generation Star Trek movie Nemesis. This is also twenty years after the events detailed in the new Star Trek movie, which were the triggers for Spock’s journey back in time. The planet of Romulus has been destroyed, the Borg are again invading other worlds for assimilation, the Cardassian Union has splintered, and the Federation and the Klingon Empire are on the brink of war. This brings us to a time with more advanced technology, new ships, and a tumultuous universe, which provides a rich backdrop for an interesting and engaging MMO universe.

There is a main storyline that players can follow, but aren’t forced to complete. The two different in-game factions each have their own side of the story, and if players choose to explore this far-reaching plot they will see a series of “episodes”. These episodes, according to Cryptic, will be interactive adventures that are very similar to episodes of the television series. These tasks can be anything from repelling a Borg invasion to shuttling ambassadors across the galaxy. Some tasks are even rumored to include mirror universes, worm holes, and time travel, so the possibilities for quests and episodes are endless and interesting.

In December, it was announced that both Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy had signed on to do voice over work for the video game. These two actors have both played the Vulcan Spock on the big screen – Nimoy in the Original Series and Quinto in the new series reboot. Very little casting information other than this has been released, so certain characters aren’t known, but it seems they are making a huge effort to make their episodes interesting and well made.

More specific details haven’t been released either officially by Cryptic or from beta testers, so keep an eye out for more news about the adventures to be had in Star Trek Online.
